ATC SCM50 ASLT active flood standing loudspeakers finished in stunning black ash. The ATC SCM50 ASLT (Active Stereo Loudspeaker Towers) floor standing loudspeakers are truly handsome. They share the same legendary HF/MF/LF drivers, active crossovers and dedicated power amplifiers as SCM50 ASL (Active Stereo Loudspeakers).
Therefore, both styles of the SCM50 reproduce music and speech with phenomenal accuracy, transparency and dynamics. Both styles of SCM50 have the control and power necessary to work in relatively cramped recording studios and in a variety of different sized listening rooms at home, as they can be placed relatively close to rear walls.Ultimately, the choice between the two speaker designs is more about athletics than sound reproduction. ATC SCM50 ASTL's and AST's are active speakers processing their own internal dedicated active crossover network and 3 dedicated power amplifiers for each of their 3 speaker cones, so they only require a pre-amp. They should not be confused with their far less expensive passive brothers the SCM50 SLT's and SL's which require a pre amp and one or more external power amplifiers. Compared to the SCM50 ASL the SCM50 ASLT has a significantly smaller foot print, a slender more elegant design and because they are floor standing have an equally large internal volume. Whilst ASL's have a short stocky utilitarian recording studio focused design, are stand mounted and cheeper. ASLT's have a slender more elegant audiophile floor standing design, making a relatively large loudspeaker a more domestically acceptable proposition. ATC speakers are highly respected by both music producers and audiophiles. Numerous reviews agree SCM50's offer an extremely revealing, satisfying and neutral way of listening to all types of music. The Absolute Sound is the worlds preeminent source of expert reviews, features, and commentary on high-performance audio and music, their. The SCM50s character is underscored by three key properties: One, midrange presence and immediacy; two, midband speed that borders on electrostatic territory; and three, a staggeringly wide dynamic envelope that easily puts electrostats and most cone loudspeakers of this size and spec to shame. In tonal balance, the SCM50 is an exemplar of ease and neutrality across the octaves. This is a no-nonsense speaker, not subject to hyperbole in any frequency range.. Few will be disappointed with the quality that this response represents.
Low-frequency musicality is stunninga combination of pitch control and effortless slam that are hallmarks of ATCs active products. The SCM50s woofer has an enviable ability to resolve textures and timbral colors, capably rendering the skins of bass drums, or the flutter of tom-toms, or the dark voicing of orchestral bass viols as bows are dragged across their strings. Where the SCM50 really grabs attention is its talent at holding onto the decay of bass notes... SCM50 has an almost eerie immediacy that seems to glean the intent of the musician before his bow touches the string or a note escapes his lips.
And piano reproduction is, in a word, breathtaking with an extended range of soundboard weight and resolution that reaches all the way back to the touch of the players fingertips... My ATC SCM50 ASLT's.
I very carefully re boxed my ATC's, intending to re-purpose them in a high end dedicated home cinema room. 8 years later my dedicated home cinema room has not happened and my beloved ATC's are now for sale. They are just about "run in" with only a year of gentle domestic use and they should provide their new owner with many years of trouble free listening pleasure. They appear to me to be in excellent condition, which you would expect from only a year of gentle home use. Regrettably, I must draw attention to the underside of the bases (which face the floor) they have been cosmetically marked by me gluing on then removing oak cones, but these cosmetic marks are not be visible in normal use (unless you have a glass floor) and could be re touched if you are that way inclined (see pictures 10 and 11 from bellow and above the bases).
They will be supplied in their original ATC packaging and dust bags, with original manuals and their ATC certificate of build. ATC SCM50's at full recommended retail price (RRP) are often considered to be a high end audiophile bargain, for those that can afford them.
