I suppose it depends on how we identify the problem. Resolution, definition yes, is one. But the other, more important issue, for me, is musicality. Well this isn't really the space to try to answer that question but it certainly involves two essentials - harmony and phrasing, coherence.
There are three speaker designs that stand out for me and no, the Logans, Maggies, Genesis, Lowthers and Overkills are not there; they are JPW AP3s, Impusle Lali and these, Castle Howards. They all have that ability to, sort of, hang on to the trailing edge of a phrase which is where, to my ears, the emotive power of human musical expression mostly resides. In many ways the Howards remind me of the Impulse Lalis, just with a lot more bass, as you would expect from a transmission line. It's something in the treble, an airiness and sparkle. It all sounds'of a piece', joined up, connected, together. It's a rare and important quality for me and, as such, I think these are some of the best speakers ever made. They are certainly the best speakers Castle ever made. In a different league to other Castle designs I have owned. Mirror matched veneers, beautiful cabinetry and finish work; radiused edges, attention to detail. Just lovely things to have around the place. Castle Howard is a transmission line so there is quite a lot of that exemplary woodwork going on inside. The frontal mid/woofer loads into a quarter-wave labyrinth. The second mid/woofer fires up from the top.Together they create a "twin-pipe quarter wave" with the mouth at the plinth, between cabinet walls and base. Each line is tuned to a different frequency. This is done with an MDF divider that runs the entire length of the enclosure to form two sections, one front one back. Toward the rear sits another panel this time placed at an angle to form a folded line for the top driver.
Dimensions (HxWxD): 1000 x 210 x 335mm. That top firing woofer is interesting.
Not exactly sure what the thinking is there but they are certainly very involving and intimate speakers to listen to.
