Hyperion HPS-938 floorstanding speakers. Amazing value! $4,000 MSRP

Your eyes are not playing tricks on you if you thought the speakers you see here are Wilson Audio's WATT/Puppy 5's. Structurally, they almost look like siblings but if you look deeper and listen to them, they are two completely different animals. The HPS-938 speakers you see here are not as massively built like the WP 5s where they weigh only about a third of the WP5s 300+ lbs which makes them a dream to handle versus the WP5s! Drivers on the Hyperion speakers are also different where they use dual 8" graphite woofers versus Wilson Audio's 8" polymer-cone woofers. The mid woofer is slightly smaller at 6.5" and is carbon fiber based whereas Wilson Audio used a 7" treated paper woofer.

The biggest difference amongst the drivers used is the used of a silk dome Copper Short Horn tweeter in the Hyperion while Wilson adopted a titanium tweeter. Frequency response is 35 Hz to 22 kHz with the WP5 having a slight advantage in the bass section where it extends down to 28 Hz. Sensitivity of the HPS-938 is at 90 dB with a nominal impedance of 6 ohm whereas the WP5 is 93 dB and 4 ohm respectively. Listening to the HPS-938 is where the difference between the two speakers come to light.

The HPS-938 is less aggressive, less forward sounding than the WP5s. The WP5s go after the music while the HPS-938 is less "anxious" and prefers a "calmer", more serene approach. Bass is nice and weighty when demanded but does not overwhelm like the WP5s.

The mids and highs are slightly more neutral and less colored than the WP5s but presents vocals and less complex musical scores in a smoother and lighter presentation. Cosmetically, the speaker's gloss back finish has the usual polishing swirl marks and a couple of nicks/dings here and there.

The bass module has some chips along the bottom edges and plate but is barely visible when you are 2-3 feet or more away. If you have the skill set to wrap the speakers or go over with a new coat of spray paint, the speakers will look awesome. The jumper cables you see in the pics (used by previous owner) will be included but we would recommend you change and use better jumper cables.
